Currently we use Veeam to backup our vSphere VMs onto a NAS device, which is then in turn copied to tape for off-site backup. This has been running great but two problems are starting to surface:
1. NAS is approaching capacity
2. Performance of NAS to tape over network is slow and we are running out of backup window
I am looking to add a 12-drive enclosure to the setup. Our tape drive host is a HP server with H221 HBA, which still has a spare SAS port. So to kill two birds with one stone, I am wondering if I can attach a SAS JBOD enclosure to the H221 to add the additional storage, and this will also mean the copy to tape operation will stay local.
I would like to use a non-HP enclosure (something like Synology RX1214) to keep the cost of enclosure and drive down, and I plan to Windows Server storage spaces to provide safety against drive...
