I'm in beginning of playing with my evaluation unit and I'm realizing there are some significant differences between backing up a VMware hosted server using the agent vs vProtect (agentless using VADP).

First thing first, vProtect is block based which in theory speeds up backups especially where there may be millions of small files on NTFS file servers as it doesn’t need to seek each file individually while traversing the file system.
Also because it is block based, if part of the file changes (i.e. multi gig database file) only the blocks that changed will be backed up in an incremental.
