Website source code backups and "pruning"

My company develops a number of websites, so we have a lot of development source code that needs to be backed up.

Actually backing it up hasn't been much of an issue, what has been an issue is deleting old backups.

All of our backups are saved to a NAS using CIFS shares. When these shares start to get full I start to delete the older backups. It's a little slow because I'm deleting them over the network.

Where it becomes a problem is each website has thousands and thousands of files all in subfolders within subfolders within more subfolders. This makes it take a very, very long time to delete these backups.

Unfortunately I can't delete the files locally since there's no file browser on the NAS.

So, I'm trying to figure out a way to keep these backed up without it taking hours to delete them later.
