Dealing with Backup Size

In the past we were using the standard GFS backup scheme. Monthly backups saved for a year, weekly fulls with daily incremental. This was when were using tapes and primarily had physical servers but in most cases we were not doing full server backups. We have moved a lot of are physical servers to virtual this year. Now we use a NAS to store all of the backup data. The problem that I have is to keep the normal GFS backup scheme with full VM backups would require around 150tb of space to keep the monthly backups for a year. 150tb NAS or SAN would be incredibly expensive. Im mainly just wondering if other people are still using the GFS backup scheme or if they are just running weekly and daily. We currently have around 50tb of backup space available which is just enough to keep weekly backups for a month.
