I evaluated and, eventually, we decided on Data Protection Manager 2012R2 as our backup solution. Overall I'm rather please with DPM. However, I just encountered a rather surprising shortcoming of DPM's ability to verify tape backups:
- DPM 2012R2 loads and unloads a tape once for each recovery pointwhen performing any kind of verification or recovery,even if the recovery points are all on the same tape.
- I am just getting started and have about 250GB in 40 recovery points going to a single tape. That takes about 5 hours to write and verify because DPM loads and unloadsthe same tape40 times in the process.
Obviously I have concerns about meeting backup windows and premature tape library failure.
