I'm looking for big picture answers. Not really interested at this point in specific product recommendations. I'm wanting to re-design our backup solution. Here's the layout. We have a mix of physical and virtual servers (VMware Essentials) a total of 10 servers. There are two offices with a 1 kbs WAN link between them. Currently I use Backup Exec to LTO3 tape. The main office I'm backing up 530 GB nightly (full backups). At the branch office we are backing up 210 GB nightly (full backups). In the main office I am just under the capacity of a single tape. Management has asked about backup to "the cloud" but they don't have an answer as to what is expected to be gained from this change. The main office backup starts @ 11 PM and verify completes around 4:40 AM. So far I have blocked 11 PM to 5 AM out as a maintenance window but I'm getting complaints about availability. All of our storage is directly installed on the servers. I'm wondering about multi staged backups (backup to disk, copy to tape & cloud type thing). Also, how to connect this all together. Currently the servers connect via a gigabit switch.
