I am currently in charge of finding a new backup solution, and after several weeks, a ridiculous number of sales phone calls, and a sense of nostalgia for the old days when things were just a little simpler (and I didn't unknowingly digging my own grave by volunteer for big projects) two contenders remain. BackupExec and Unitrends.
We currently use BackupExec, and it has served us well for the past 8 years. However, all of our servers a falling out of warranty and the renewal of BackupExec is coming so we thought we would checkout our options for backup solutions. That is when we heard about Unitrends (and others that have been kicked from the running due to various reasons).
After a quick quote and several discussions with the Unitrends team I know that the solutions is solid and the various forum posts here on SpiceWorks seem to agree. The biggest issue is, management is going to look at the price difference between the BackupExec renewal and the new Unitrends solution and as the all to familiar question
"Why should we pay XX,000 more for a new solution when the one we have used has always works?"
Frankly, they have a point. What are the intangible benefits of Unitrends that makes it hands down better than BackupExec? Sure it's a little easier to use, but that's convenience, not necessity. Otherwise a lot (if not all) the functionality in Unitrends I can get in BackupExec. What makes companies throw their established BackupExec Solution in favor of a whole new Unitrends Solution?
I have found many great answers on SpiceWorks and I am really looking forward to the answer to these vague and opinionated questions.
Thanks in advance!
