Hi,
I am currently backing up our virtual environment using Backup Exec. Post http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/409566-backup-exec-2012-offsite-copy-to-nas shows my current solution.
Basically, I am backing up to a RAID 5 NAS and then copying to 1 Bay NAS for me to take offsite.
However, the backup of SBS server is currently taking around 18 hours, so is not completing by the next day.
I am thinking of going with Veeam Backup Essentials as I believe that the backups will be a lot quicker with this (anyone had 1st hand experience of backup speeds with Veeam?).
While I am changing our backup solution, I thought I might as well look into backing up to an offsite NAS (via VPN over leased line), however I am not sure on the best set up in terms of how many proxy servers I'd need and where to place them.
I need to backup around 10 VMs (Various OS) running off 2 ESXi hosts (see my diagram below). Any advice on how best to set up this solution would be appreciated, however the main things I would really like advice on is:
- How many proxy servers?
- Where to place the proxy servers (do I need one at HQ and remote site etc)
- What OS should the proxy servers run?
- Does the proxy run on same server as the Veeam backup program?
- I will probably install Veeam Backup Essentials on a new VM, however should I use Server 2012 or Win 7/8?
- What type of backup would be best? (It's only a 10mbps line so I would want to keep bandwidth as low as possible). The Synthetic full backup option looks like it would work well, as I'd only have the initial full backup - However I'd still like to know what you think would work best.
Thanks in advance!!
