Where is the BDR Marketplace Going?

We sell a lot of different servers and storage appliances at my company and I find it interesting watching what's happening in the Backup and Disaster Recovery marketplace especially as it relates to small and medium businesses.

I'm curious to know what Spiceheads think about the need for a local backup appliance vs just backing up everything straight to the cloud without needing an option to restore from locally.

Some vendors like Datto have had great success selling a local appliance that backs up an SMB's clients and server and then replicating to the cloud.

Other vendors like Carbonite say a local appliance isn't needed and you should just back-up everything straight to the cloud and this will save the expense of having a local appliance and your data is just as safe.

Storagecraft positions their software as being the best of both worlds where you can backup locally but recover in the cloud and run virtually almost immediately in case of a disaster.

I'm curious if there a long term need for a local appliance like Datto is selling or will the cloud just take over completely?

Do small and medium businesses trust only having their data backed-up to the cloud or is there a certain security in knowing that there is a local back-up at all times.

Any opinions you could give me on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Todd
