CSV backups with Veeam

Hi guys

I’ve got a Server 2012 r2 cluster setup with 6 x 2012 r3 nodes and I’m testing Veeam 7 for VM backups – the VHD / VHDX’s are located on a CSV running on top of a software-based SAN. I’ve got my VMM server configured in Veeam and backups are completing successfully, but I’ve noticed that the ‘transfer’ of data is happening through the CSV owner node and not the source node as I expected. I’m basing my expectations on the way DPM 2012 r2 was doing backups of the same VM’s – it would transfer the data through the hypervisor hosting the VM, but I’m not seeing this when using Veeam.

Everything I’ve read seems to indicate that with Server 2012 there shouldn’t be IO redirection, unless explicitly specified on the CSV – which it isn’t. We are NOT using a backup proxy and also not planning on doing so since our SAN does not have a hardware VSS provider.

Does anyone have experience with this or point me in the right direction – I’d like to have my backup transfers happen through the source nodes and not the CSV owner node.

Thanks
