Recommendation for a backup solution

$

Dear All,

For a small shop with one HyperV host on Windows Server 2012 R2 with 2VMs running I need a reasonable backup solution. As a backup target I was thinking to use a RDX disks.

What do you recommend? Most important is to backup the HyperV VMs and a bit less important to backup the host.

I was thinking for Veeam Endpoint solution to install on the HyperV host. But will it be able to restore the whole VM or just some Windows files?

Thanks,

Weird Backup Issue

This is just a shot in the dark in case someone else has come up with this before. I've been using R-Drive Image for my backups. Good, basic, cheap program that easily handles all the basics. Just the other week, though, it started throwing up an issue. On one of my Virtual Servers (2008R2) it would complete the backup, but flag an error on the verify with a corrupted file. When I try running a 'fresh' backup manually to that same target (NAS) I get the same error. If I try backing up from a different VM to that target, that backup verifies fine. It's also fine if I backup the 'problem' VM data to a different target (my workstation).

Any ideas?

Best Way to backup users Documents

Hey guys,

Currently I backup all my users documents in the office by using a mixed script of xcopy and robocopy commands. Just to get their Documents folder backed up to my NAS.

What I'm really looking for is something that takes the pressure away from having to check the script has ran properly every morning and make sure that everything has been backed up from the day before.

Is there any decent cheap or free program out there that can backup my users Documents?

I know I can use folder redirection with offline files but what i really want is something that I can keep a few days backups of, instead of it being incremental or just updating in both places when users are online.

thanks in advance for suggestions.

This seems like a silly question, but for the life of me I can't figure out what company uses [name].managemybackups.com. Has anyone come across this company before?

Anyone in the Crashplan Partner Program?

Hello all,

Anyone in the Crashplan Agent Partner Program? I'm possibly going to make a change from Carbonite.

My main issues with Carbonite are:

- The Carbonite InfoCenter is not at all reliable. It'll say everything is fine, where the website says the backups aren't happening. This happens pretty often across all the machines I backup. A restart usually fixes it, but not always.

- The Carbonite Backup Drive doesn't always show what's really been backed up. I've seen instances where there are tons of files missing, but the web interface has them.

- I've had restore issues where the restore server was down for days before I could get files back. I got them in the end, but I didn't have much confidence.

From my reading online it seems like Crashplan is more reliable and faster. It will cost a bit more as it's per computer pricing vs pay per...

Hyper-V host backup on Unitrends, all volumes? Or will that duplicate the VMs?

On a Unitrends Appliance, if I setup a backup of a Hyper-V host machine should I use the Protect all volumes option?  Or will that create a duplicate backup all the VMs, which are backed up in the VM section?

Hi,

Over the past couple of nights some of our VM's have failed because of the below error message

"Could not allocate processing resources within allotted timeout (82800 sec)

Error: Timed out waiting for backup infrastructure resources to become available (82800 sec)"

Please can anyone shed some light on this at all?

Thanks

StoreGrid / Vembu BDR Alternatives?

My company is currently offering Vembu BDR / StoreGrid service to a few of our clients, but frankly it sucks, so we might be looking to move to a different platform; for those of you who are "cloud" backup re-sellers, what do you use and what do you recommend?

Here's what we would need from a product:

- On-premises backup server (Linux/Windows/whatever)
- Remote server at our facility for backup server replication and BDR (Linux/Windows/whatever)
- Backup client for Server 2003-2012R2, Windows desktop, and Linux
- Granular Exchange backup and restore
- Ideally we would be able to restore to VM, either Hyper-V or KVM/QEMU
- Lower cost is better. Basically if it's cheaper than Datto (which I love, but my boss doesn't) then we'd be interested.
- It MUST be BYO hardware, no dedicated devices.

Any thoughts?

"VMware tools status is NotRunning" on a Veeam backup job

Hi guys,

Been trying to crack down this one with Veeam but so far nobody there was able to help so hopefully here.
I'm getting the event above (see screenshot) on only one server. Been working fine 3 days ago but not sure what has changed. VMware Tools are showing current and updated on vSphere. Yet, I tried uninstall them and reinstall them but it didn't work. No major event log errors that I was able to find. Tried disabling the anti virus and that didn't work. quiescence on the Veeam job is disabled per the tech's advice (it was also disabled before)

Any idea what am I missing here?

Any thoughts on how to get Veeam backup files to removable drives (daily)

Hey all,

I have been fighting this processes for the last month and I have not found a smooth successful process that does not require daily management.

Goal:

To get a full backup of my environment to a removable drive daily so that it can be sent off site.

Environment

  • Veeam 8
  • Backup server with internal storage for primary backup (everything is working good for the primary backup)
  • Total backup size 4 TBDaily change 250-350 GB
  • Internet Connection - Main office 50 Mbs - remote offices 10 Mbs
  • Currently running weekly backup to tape - mostly running ok but takes a lot of management and crashes on my relatively often
  • USB 3/eSATA disk direct attached to server
  • Data should be ready to go off site at 10 AM

Things I have tried

Backup copy job (starts once a day Midnight)

Day 1 - starts copying on the first day until it hits midnight where it creates an...

Want to move from physical tape backups to virtual tape backups

Right now we are using CA ARCServe Backup software paired with a Quantum Ultrium 5 Superloader to do tape daily, weekly, and monthly backups. It is very cumbersome and time consuming. I have more important things to do than stand around in the cold server room to manually eject and inject tapes.

I did some preliminary research, and saw Amazon offers AWS Storage Gateway, and Luminex MVT

Has anyone have experience doing the transition from physical to virtual tape solutions? What are some important factors to consider?

I would prefer an offsite, hosted solution, but am open to other options as well.

Cloud Backup Solution for outsourced IT Management company

In addition to working as an IT Manager, I also work as an outsourced IT Consultant for small / medium sized companies (and some individuals) that don't need or can't afford a full time IT person in house.

Part of the services that I provide is ensuring that each customer's computer (or server) is backed up. Now that cloud backup has become more reasonably priced, I am looking for a solution that would allow me to centrally manage these backups for all of the different companies in one place. The current project that I'm working on is for a very small law office that doesn't even have a server, so it's only backing up desktop machines, but as time goes by I hope to implement a standard across all of my clients servers and/or desktops as needed. Some of the companies already have other solutions in place, so I guess my ideal would be to...

Colo location

we just converted our network from P2V, and are looking for a place to put our backup server.

our original plan was to put our DR server in a colo thats here in town, only a few miles away. That state that this Colo can withstand an F5 tornado.

However, my argument was you need to put in another state (dallas, tx) therefore its plenty of miles away.

Thoughts?
