Best free personal backup software?

I'm now working in the IT department of a state university. We have a list of "supported software" that includes a number of open source titles (for example, Thunderbird). We also have a university license for McAfee and preach the idea of security and safety. We always tell people they should be backing up, as well, but we offer absolutely no support for it. I would like to bring some solutions to my supervisor in order to offer a link to the download and support of a free backup solution.

My belief is that this would mostly be necessary for Windows machines, as many Mac users are pretty much covered by Time Machine. I'm aware that Windows has a built-in backup, but it is difficult to use for the average user. I would love to be able to have as near to a set-it-and-forget-it experience as possible.

I have used Cobian for my private clients in the past. It's not as simple a solution as I would like, but I could go with that. I'm just looking for other possible options that won't incur an actual cost to the university.

Any suggestions?
