Hi Everybody,
I'm trying to come up with a backup solution for my companies surveillance system. We record 24/7 video because of regulatory requirements, which creates about 250 GB of data on a daily basis. I have been asked to archive the video indefinitely.
We have 2 recording servers / DVRs, the first has 8 TB of capacity, and the second has 4 TB of capacity. The DVRs both hold about 40 days worth of video, and delete old video as new video is recorded. (I know the numbers don't add up, if you would like the exact retention time, let me know).
There is currently a 100 Mb network between both DVRs, so I'm not currently planning on a network backup; though I could potentially upgrade to gig. The best/cheapest solution that I can come up with is a 16 slot LTO-6 tape autoloader connected to each DVR (they are Dell R310 servers running Windows 7 embedded). Then do a nightly, weekly and monthly backup, with the monthly going offsite for ever.
At this point, my budget is around 15k. I have received quotes for the above set up, and it falls under budget, including SAS HBAs, and the first set of tapes.
Finally the question, does anyone have any recommendations/suggestions for a better solution, or is this an acceptable direction to go? I know Unitrends is going to come up, as I said, my budget sits at around 15k (not including future purchases of tapes, or drives).
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Sorry for my overuse of commas, I don't know what else to do.
TL;DR: I need to archive about 12 TB of surveillance video a month. Thinking of tape only. Any other recommendations?
