Do you do DB backups in addition to your VM backups?

For those who use VEEAM or other CBT style backup.

Do you also do separate backups of your SQL DB's? I'm wary of CBT for active SQL DB's so for large ones, 30GB+ I've been running SQL Backups to the local disk, then backing that local disk up using VEEAM.

I know there is the option to use VSS within VEEAM for SQL but considering the fragility of SharePoint SQL DB's I feel more comfortable.

Is this a best practice or just being overly cautious.
