Backup Software - Physical and Virtual Servers

Morning all,

I recently purchased a new backup solution. We already owned a Quantum Superloader 3 but backups were taking 35 hours to complete... causing inconsistent backups. So I bought in a server with 7TB storage so we can now run disk to disk to tape backups.

The supplier offered backup exec 2012 or Veeam as backup software solutions. I went with Symantec Backup Exec 2012 because veeam wasn't able to backup physical servers (we have a mixed environment containing both physical and virtual servers). I'd also been using backup exec 2010 previously so figured it was better the devil you know... I am now regretting that decision.

Not only did myself and the supplier quickly discover that Backup Exec will not run on server 2012 (so had to downgrade the backup server) but I've also had non-stop problems with it since install. Random backup failures due to "unspecified errors" (which Symantec's response was "it just happens sometimes") were just the start. The product is shoddy and the biggest waste of money I have ever spent.

So- what backup software do you recommend? Why?

We have a Quantum Autoloader (Superloader 3) which we still want to use so the product must be compatible.

Would I be able to run Veeam on the same server as backup exec 2012 or is that likely to cause even more problems? I was thinking Veeam for VMs and backup exec (seeing as I've already paid for it) for physical servers.
