With Veeam 7, I'm trying to wrap my head around backup copy jobs, their benefits, and how I should change my backup configuration.
The benefits (I think):
- Tiering - Keep most recent backup(s) on disk array with more horsepower (to allow vPower), and keep older backups on cheaper storage.
- Allows off-site backup during production hours (bandwidth permitting), since it doesn't hit the VM infrastructure (no VM going offline while a snapshot commits, etc).
Any other major benefits? It seems like this might be useful to seed an offsite backup somehow, like if you add a new VM (maybe?).
A typical configuration for mostly smaller clients is some kind of small on-site backup array (8-disk or so), plus an off-site backup job. So a couple of questions:
- Since I don't really have different levels of storage on-site, should anything change? Or is the benefit that I could add a cheap eSATA disk and get some longer retention?
- Should the off-site job be replaced with a backup copy job since it has WAN acceleration, and (I think) will be more flexible when VM additions happen (I'm hoping to avoid the full-backup-and-ship-offsite routine, when possible).
