vRanger Pro backup slow

I am installing a vRanger backup solution into our new VMware ESXi based hosts. The VMs are all Windows. I am backing up to a Synology NAS device - a rack mounted RS812 device that's loaded with 8 Tb of free space. Should be enough.

So, I set up a backup job and run it. Performance is terrible - around 15 MB/sec. The ESXi host and Synology device are both on the same Cisco Gb switch. I have another Synology NAS - a little DS112. That's the same. So I try & back up to a "proper" physical server. Much faster to start with, and then slowed down to a crawl. Now up to 254 MB/sec. But I did see the Synology device spike to quite high speeds too.

A backup of a 35 Gb VM took 2 1/2 hrs on the NAS. It took 24 minutes to the physical Windows server. And it failed with error on the NAS : Error Message: 3208 - can't read cifs. But the NAS has been up all the time. Successful backup to the physical Windows server.

I've done some Googling, but nothing is jumping out at me.

Any ideas, anyone ?
