Single file server environment 2008 R2, 7 users, in a remote rural area with slow microwave internet connection. The backup goes to a pre-existing NAS, 2X TB, RAID, 1X every day.
At the recommendation of the Spiceworks community in an other thread, I am now attempting to backup the NAS once a week to a USB drive attached to the server for taking off site. This is in place of hot swapping the NAS drives once a week to carry off site. That was causing restore failures.
I am using wbadmin.msc to backup the server to the NAS. It is working as advertised. But, unlike the old backup.exe (Server 2003 etc.) it doesn't seem to have the functionality to allow another separate backup job to be created. The NAS itself does not have any stand alone backup functionality, it is mostly a dumb device.
I considered writing a .bat file to run in task scheduler to backup the NAS to the USB drive on the server, once a week using xcopy. During testing the task scheduler said it ran the .bat file successfully, but nothing showed up on the USB drive and the process only took a couple of minutes. I was able to successfully run the .bat file manually. But this introduces the issue of wbadmin not realizing the USB contains a backup to restore from.
There has to be a way to get this done, but I haven't seen any info here, or in the server help screens, for setting up multiple individual backups job.The NAS share is \\DEVICE_NAME\backups, and I want to send a usable backup of that backup to the K: Drive(USB).
