Currently using Backup Exec successfully, but just bought my first license for Veeam Essentials Enterprise. I still have some physical servers, so things are bit complicated until we fully virtualize. My RPO/RTO are not too strict. RPO no more than 4 hours, RTO 1-2, but probably will change once I get a new host in so I can then replicate in addition to backup.
My initial plan
ReadyNAS 316 with probably 12TB of space (down the road will get another unit for rsync offsite)
Setup plan so I have probably 90 days of restore availability.
Backup the backup sets to tape with Backup Exec (I know 7 will support tape, but not out yet)
My questions
- We currently are backing up about 1TB daily and my calculations show we are growing at about 12GB/month. With the amount of available space, should I keep more than 90 days onsite?
- Veeam can backup two ways. Reverse Incremental which is normally to disk. Normal Incremental usually recommended for tape and backup to remote sites. I'm a little on the fence on this one. I want to keep as much local as possible for quick restores and testing, but I don't want to shoot myself in the foot with offsite objectives. Love to have opinions. Looking for suggestions.
- I do like the synthetic full options. Any experience on this?
My current tape is LTO5 so am looking at 1.5/3TB. Obviously, depending on the backup method and the number of available fulls will dictate what will fit on tape. At a minimum, I will need to backup to tape once or twice a week, so am obviously being constrained a bit.
Anyway, suggestions and thoughts appreciated in advance.
