Shadow Copy Size

I am backing up a Windows Server 2012 with BackupAssist to removable media on an RD1000 drive. The backups have been working perfectly (I do DR tests weekly) but recently the backups have been failing. The current failure appears to be due to the volume shadow being deleted (error below) on the data volume. The OS volume backs up fine. If I use vssadmin to check the shadow copies on the data volume there are none listed whereas on the OS volume there are three. The error BackupAssist is throwing out is

Thebackup of volume (D:) could not be completed. Error: Backup failed asshadow copy on source volume got deleted. This might caused by highwrite activity on the volume. Please retry the backup. If the issuepersistsconsider increasing shadow copy storage using 'VSSADMIN ResizeShadowStorage' command.

I have searched but have not found any...
