AppAssure Agent, bcdedit and \windows\temp filling up with .tmp.log files

I get the honour of leading IT for a medium size business across three campuses. We have a streamlined operation with 5 bare metal servers and 3 VM hypervisors that run 11 guest servers.

I first noticed something awry when the boot volume on one of our AppAssure-protected virtual servers began to run out of disk space.

After much digging, I noticed that all our AppAssure-protected virtual servers currently have 100 000 files in the \windows\temp directory. The files are typically named:

  • tmpNNNN.tmp.log (typically 21.5KB)
  • tmpNNNN.tmp.log1 (always 0 bytes)

  • tmpNNNN.tmp.log2 (always 0 bytes)

Additional inspection with Sysinternals' Process Monitor revealed that AppAssure's Agent.Service.exe would spawn bcdedit.exe every minute or so, and the latter in turn would write these files ad infinitum.
