DPM 2010, backup Exchange using DAG or DBs on servers?

Hi!

We have an Exchange environment which started out with one Exchange server (exchange2.ctunet.dom). This is a virtual machine on Hyper-V. We have been backing up the Exchange DB on this server using DPM 2010.

Recently, we got our hands on some metal and added one more Exchange server (exchange1.ctunet.dom). We created a DAG (MailDAG) where these two Exchange servers are members. The Exchange servers are hosting one mail database (MailDB1) which is replicated across those two servers. Exchange2 also hosts our Public Folders database (PublicFolderDB1).

Now, in DPM 2010 the Exchange1.ctunet.dom appears as an available member, but also our MailDAG has appeared automatically as a member.

The big question is now: What should we choose to include in our Protection Group?

1. The MailDB1 from either exchange1 or exchange2, along with the PublicFolderDB1 from exchange2?

2. The MailDB1 and the PublicFolderDB1 from MailDAG?

We failed to understand the difference and the benefits/harms in regards to restoring data from DPM, if this should be required. Is it possible use the backup from the MailDAG if one of the Exchange servers must be replaced?

Thank you very much in advance!

Best,

Janus
