What is the best way to set up a backup to SAN

I'm starting to play around with setting up a new backup system at my company.

I plan on backing up to a SAN drive hosted on a NAS: the backups would then be copied to a 2nd NAS via Rsynch or similar in a different location. The idea behind this is that I have a very large amount of data to back up and doing so over a network would take too long, also the amount of data would fill up a lot of tape drives.

I have set up a test SAN on an ubuntu box but I am getting some strange results. These could be because I have done something silly with the setup but it could be because I am ignorant of best practices when it comes to setting up and using a SAN.
