Hey all
Sometimes when you start a project you dont expect it to work at all or expect weeks trying to make it work. And this was the case with my current issue. I know ive searched for a solution to this so i thought id share it for anyone who searches for this in the future.
We have an ANCIENT HP-ML330 server running sco open server 5 and informix, its absolutely vital to our company and we have had major major issues with the windows version of the software for years.
We had rock solid backups (unitrends) but problems getting parts for our old server, so if something happens to the machine we were still in trouble.
So we wanted to get this machine virtualized. It actually turned out to be a lot simpler than expected!!
Anyway process for me was
1) Change the ip address of the client on our unitrends device, and create a new BM cd
2) Create a virtual machine ( i used virtualbox as my vmware trial had run out)
3) Set up network and a hard disk, allocate memory. For us intel pro 1000 NIC worked. and a dynamic disk worked fine too. SCSI controller did NOT work, we had to go ide.
4) attach BM iso to the virtual machine
5) boot from the iso
6) Restore from baremetal backup
7) shut down virtual machine and disable NIC as system was still live.
8) Reboot
It all worked without a hitch, and a project id expected to be a fustrating week, took an hour, largely due to the way unitrends works to be honest.
Now that i have proven it works with free virtualbox software, do people recommend purchasing VMware?
Believe it or not, i have only worked with physical installations before, this is my first time looking at VM at all.
Anyway if anyone else is looking to migrate legacy unix/sco i hope this is a help.
I imagine this can work with other backup software as well.
