Hey there, fresh into the SpiceWorks community so I thought i'd fire away straight off the bat.
I'm looking into different backup solutions and wouldn't mind a few tips.
We are upgrading and will redesign our current setup which is running Hyper-v and backups through DPM.
Basically 98% of everything is running VM:s on Hyper-V 2012 (after the upgrade) and the question is if we stick with DPM (which of course will be upgraded as well) or change, we are aminly looking at veeam as an alternative but i've seen a lot here about Unitrends.
The main drawback of veeam as I see it is that we need to back some non VM machines, for example the Hyper-V:s themself and some other legacy servers. A combination is of course less desirable but doable. We have DPM "for-free" given the licensing model and licenses we have so there's that of course but the quality and sustainability of our backups is of course more important than any license fee for the "best" product for out situation.
The Hyper-V:s are clustered and there's a SAN behind all that whilst the Backup server is a VM on a standalone Hyper-V (together with some other VM:s, management etc). The new implementation of DPM, if that will be the end result will most likely run a combination of disk backup and virtual tapes for long term. The VM:s themselves have file servers, SQL:s, Exchange etc.
All VM:s are windows based.
There's of course lots of other information and circumstances but I thought i'd throw the ball out there. I found a similar post but given it was from 2012 I thought i'd ask again.
