I'm helping a sister company install a new Veeam Backup server. Previous IT Manager bought the licenses but never implemented it. We are on a tight budget, so using an existing server. I'd appreciate any input on the setup, as this is my first time working with Veeam (use Unitrends at my site).
I'd like to virtualize the Veeam all-in-one Backup server, which will allow us to have their primary domain controller on this server as well. The backup DC will go on their new 2 node cluster/EqualLogic.
There will be about 1.5TB of data and 8 virtual machines to backup.
Server Stats:
- PowerEdge 2950 - 4x 3GHz cores, 12GB memory, 6x 300GB SAS 15K drives in RAID10 for VM OSes. Run ESXi 5.1.
- MD1000 DAS - 15x 2TB 7200 drives in RAID6 for Veeam repository
Veeam will run on a Windows 2012 Std. x64 VM with 3x 3GHz cores, 8GB memory. Repository will be ~25TB using physical compatibility mode RDM to the large RAID6 volume on the MD1000.
The PE2950 has two NICs. I will dedicate one to the iSCSI SAN (EqualLogic) for the backups. The second NIC will be for regular VM network traffic for the two VMs.
Offsite backups will be copied to a 2TB external USB drive via USB Passthrough, once a week.
The other option would be to install Windows 2012 directly on the PE2950 and use Hyper-V to virtualize the domain controller?
Trying to keep this simple and efficient. Any issues with my proposed setup? I'm trying to reduce physical servers, thus why I'm virtualizing it to allow the domain controller to seperate from the primary cluster/SAN.
