UEB 7.3 Trial - Storage Difficulties

I recently started my trial of Unitrends 7.3 and I have had some difficulty setting up storage.

What I have accomplished so far:

For this lab experiment I threw (6) 250GB drives into an old Dell 2950 and loaded nas4free live CD. I created a zfs pool of mirrored pairs. From what I understand essentially RAID 10.

The first go around I attempted to connect directly to the storage via the UEB > Backup Storage. All previous instructions show that direct backup to NAS should be possible. However, I found this discussion which leads me to believe that direct connection to NAS has been removed in version 7.3 and is no longer possible.

So that my 30-days do not go to waste I went back to Nas4free, created the necessary iscsi settings, and added the storage volume to my Hyper-V server. I then attached the storage volume as a passthrough disk to the UEB virtual appliance.

My question(s):

This seems to work OK. However, it just feels like a significant amount of hoops to jump through. I'm layering a lot of protocols and I'm worried about overhead. Is the storage setup described anywhere near best (or even OK) practices? Did I miss something where I actually can just connect directly to the NAS?

My reason for testing and the ultimate goal is to replace/supplement tape backup. I would like to leverage something like UEB to backup to a local storage device and replicate to an offsite storage device.
